A New £19M Opportunity for UK Exporters to Mexico
Twelve pork exporters from England and Northern Ireland have just secured approval to ship British pork to Mexico—a fast-growing market with a taste for premium products and classic pork dishes like tacos de buche.
With Mexican pork consumption increasing 5.4% annually, this new agreement could generate over £19 million in trade over the next five years. That’s good news for UK pig farmers and a big win for importers looking to source high-quality, welfare-led pork for the Mexican market.
Why It Matters
- Trusted British Quality: UK pork is globally respected for its production standards and health and welfare practices.
- More than Meat: In addition to cuts like pork chops, exporters can now supply offal and edible by-products—essential for dishes beloved in Mexico but less in demand at home.
- Stronger Farm Gate Prices: Exporting underutilized cuts helps UK farmers get more value from each carcass.
This development also clears the path for future growth. Once Mexico ratifies the UK’s entry into the CPTPP, 20% tariffs on pork are expected to be eliminated—making British pork even more competitive.
What’s Next?
This milestone comes after eight years of collaboration between UK and Mexican authorities. It adds to the UK’s momentum in global pork trade, following recent wins with China and the US. Defra and AHDB will continue supporting UK exporters as trade begins.
